As a black woman in tech over the last twenty years, Nici has experienced and overcome the many pitfalls that can hinder the growth and success of a woman in technical roles, especially a black woman. Through her hard work and resiliency, she stands out in her field having grown and positioned herself to lead enterprise level software delivery teams. In addition to her professional experiences, she uses her free time to speak to others at conferences and events across the country as an evangelist for black women in technology.

01. June 1996

Marist College C-STEP

Poughkeepsie, NY

Nici was enrolled in the Marist College Computer Science Technology Enrichment Program. At 16 years old she had was exposed to a wide range of STEM topics via weekend on campus visits, and the summer sleep away program.

15. May 1997

Hampton University

As a curious and studious 17 year old, Nici began her formal computer Science training during the Hampton University Pre-college summer programs. This allowed her to obtain class credits prior to her official freshman year.

05. September 1997

 Clarion University

As a sophomore computer science major, Nici discovered HTML, CSS, and Javascript. She began freelancing by creating websites for campus organizations. In 1999, she landed her first professional development job as the Web Master for the Office of Career Services. Where she developed features for and maintained the university career portal for students.

It is also during this time that she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. in the Spring of 2000 as a charter member of the newly formed Eta Rho Chapter.

University at Albany

After having to leave Clarion University due to financial reasons, Nici transferred her education to UAlbany where she double majored in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics. Through the next four years she would continue freelancing by building websites for a number of clients, which allowed her to build a robust portfolio in preparation for graduation. She received a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.S. in Applied Mathematics in May of 2005.

Poughkeepsie, NY

Upon graduation, Nici secured her first post graduate job at one of the internets first online dating  startup companies, As a junior developer, she honed her engineering skills in a .Net and SQL stack. Quickly being promoted in the first 6 months to mid-level developer, Nici contributed heavily to the growth of features enhancing the online dating experience.

Zone 5 Marketing

As a full scale marketing agency Zone 5 gave Nici the opportunity to again build websites for a wide range of industries from Health Care to Higher Education. Most notably having re-developed the entire Sage University Website in a robust Content Management System and training the university faculty in its use.

Albany, NY

Answering the call to her entrepreneurial spirit, Nici left traditional employment and started her own web design and development company, catering to sorority and fraternity chapters nationwide. Content management frameworks like Drupal, Joomla, and Magento were used to create websites and membership portals for her clients.

02. January 2010

Ingage Netorks

Naples, FL

As one of the many startups in the social media space, Ingage Networks targeted building internal social networks for Fortune 500 companies. Nici was instrumental in building one of such networks for American Express.

Pivoting to HealthTech, Nici was a key member of the teams that built and maintained WebMD's famed Symptom Checker,  and Drug Interaction Checker.

Centers for Disease Control

Atlanta, GA

While at the CDC Nici made her first step towards technology leadership as the Lead Javascript Developer. She was able to lead the UI development team in the full re-development of the CDC website.

CISCO formerly Lancope

Atlanta, GA

As Senior UI Engineer, Nici further honed her agile, design thinking, and leadership skills as a critical member of Lancope's Stealthwatch Security Suite product team. The cyber security startup would later be purchased by Cisco Systems, giving Nici further opportunity to gain network security training and experience.

Georgia Tech

Nici is currently pursuing her Masters in Computer Science with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence in Georgia Tech's  OMSCS program.  

Nici is distinctly interested in researching the implications machine learning has on User Experience and how it changes the implementation of User Interfaces for the future

Serving in her most recent capacity as Lead UI Engineer on the core UI team at Amobee, undertaking the task of re-developing and merging the UIs of multiple Amobee products.

Nici was invited to speak on the Black Women in Technology panel where she gave conference attendees the ground level inside look at what it takes to be a software engineer, its benefits, and the state of the tech industry for Black Women.

Atlanta, GA

Nici provides instruction in programming, complex problem solving, and agile project delivery to Black Women, who are underrepresented in the technology industry as engineers and developers. It is her goal to help women who are interested in transitioning their careers to the rapidly expanding technology and innovation economies in preparation for the evolving job market.

Black Tech Weekend

Kansas City, MO & Tulsa, OK

Nici was invited to speak with the Black Tech Weekend Tour on career and skills training panels where she gave conference attendees the ground level inside look at what it takes to become a software engineer, the best path into the industry, and why she decided start Gurl Code Academy. In addition to the panels she was able to conduct two skills training workshops, giving participants deeper insight on the relevant skillsets needed to be a successful engineer.
